With Memorial Day behind us, the summer driving season is “officially” underway. Predictably, the price of gasoline is rising.
AAA has warned motorists’ gasoline prices are expected to remain high this summer, a reoccurring trend. Since 1995, when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated two types of gasoline formulas be used – summer and winter blend – a stark contrast in price began to emerge.
In order to reduce pollution, summer-blend fuels use different oxygenates, or fuel additives. These blends, the EPA claims, burn cleaner and also help compensate for a limited oil supply. The EPA says this practice of using seasonal blends also encourages the development of alternative fuels.
