Shutdown just another excuse to delay Keystone XL

This complementary section of the Keystone pipeline is necessary for the safe transport of U.S. and Canadian crude oil to our refineries. Pipelines are unequivocally the safest means of transporting oil from the Dakotas. Furthermore, additional capacity in the Keystone line will help ensure our nation’s energy security by receiving more of the resources we need from friendly North American neighbors. T. Boone Pickens may be on to something when he announced last week that Canadian oil spells the end of OPEC, something we should all celebrate forty years after the Arab oil embargo nearly brought our country to a standstill.

U.S. data on incidents from 2005 to 2009 “show that road and rail have higher rates of serious incidents, injuries and fatalities than pipelines, even though more road and rail incidents go unreported,” said the report authors, Manhattan Institute senior fellow Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Kenneth Green, senior director of natural resource policy studies at the Fraser Institute.

“Transporting oil by pipeline is safe and environmentally friendly,” the report concluded.

Airlines Cash In on Every Inch, Even the Jammed Bins Overhead

Many travelers may not realize it, but a seat ticket does not automatically entitle them to overhead space. Once space runs out, passengers must check their luggage at the gate, without paying a fee — and then wait for it at the baggage claim at their destination. Airlines are capitalizing on the fact that many fliers are willing to pay for carry-on convenience.
