Following a string of complaints from the public and congress, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s subsidiary responsible for commercial truck and bus safety has begun to crack down on non-compliant bus companies.
Transportation secretary Ray LaHood ordered the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to take a closer look at passenger bus safety following reports that unsafe carriers were still being allowed to operate while appealing their out of service orders.
For many years the FMCSA has concentrated its efforts on commercial trucking while the commercial and private charter bus companies had escaped greater scrutiny.
