Biofuels Producers Blame Big Oil for EPA Plan to Cut Renewable Fuel Standard

Biofuel producers are uniting to point the finger at the oil industry for the EPA’s lower RFS. Producers blame them because of the oil industry’s heavy handed pushes to reduce the mandate of renewable fuel production. Obviously, the critics of the RFS are quite pleased with the outcome, but no one is completely satisfied yet.

“While the EPA took a step in the right direction, more must be done to assure Americans have the choice of fuel they want and we’re continuing our call for Congress to act now,” said Jack Gerard, president of the American Petroleum Institute.

On Friday the EPA announced that it is lowering the biofuel requirement from 18.15 billion gallons to a target amount of 15.21 billion gallons. This caused somewhat of an uproar, with unanimous displeasure from all within the biofuels industry. While they are worried about what this means for the future of biofuels, the oil industry and its supporters are celebrating the victory of this battle even while they prepare for the next round: convincing Congress to abolish the mandate.
